You buy omega 3 thinking you're investing in your cardiovascular and brain health. But if the oil is oxidised—and independent studies show that up to 80% of commercial brands exceed oxidation limits—you're not just wasting money: you're introducing free radicals that accelerate ageing. Oxidised omega 3 is worse than taking nothing at all.

The problem isn't new, but it's become endemic with the explosion of the market. Independent laboratories analyse shelf products and find peroxide levels (oxidation markers) that double or triple safe limits. The IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) certification is currently the only seal that guarantees purity, potency and freshness through third-party analysis. In this article I explain what IFOS is, why it matters more than price or brand, and how to identify an omega 3 that actually works.

What is IFOS certification and why does it exist

IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) is an independent certification programme founded in 2004 by Nutrasource, an ISO 17025-accredited Canadian laboratory. It emerged because the omega 3 industry lacked verifiable standards: brands self-evaluated their products, declared EPA/DHA without external audit, and no one measured oxidation.

IFOS analyses each production batch—not just the theoretical formula—in five categories:

  1. Oxidation (TOTOX, peroxides, anisidine): measures whether the oil is rancid.
  2. Purity (heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins): verifies absence of contaminants.
  3. Potency (actual EPA/DHA): confirms that the label isn't lying.
  4. Freshness (secondary oxidation index): detects early degradation.
  5. GMP compliance (good manufacturing practice).

Certification is per batch, not perpetual. The same product can have IFOS 5-star batches and others that don't pass. That's why serious brands publish the IFOS certificate of the current batch on their website, with the batch number visible so you can verify yours.

Why omega 3 oxidises (and why it's a problem)

Omega 3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid with multiple double bonds in its carbon chain. Those bonds are chemically reactive: oxygen, light, heat and time attack them, generating lipid peroxides and aldehydes (toxic compounds). This process is called lipid oxidation or rancidity.

When you consume oxidised omega 3:

  • You introduce free radicals that damage cell membranes, mitochondrial DNA and lipoproteins (oxidised LDL, a cardiovascular risk factor).
  • You reduce the bioavailability of EPA/DHA: your body must neutralise the rancid oil before it can use the fatty acids.
  • You cancel out anti-inflammatory benefits: studies in animal models show that oxidised omega 3 increases inflammatory markers (IL-6, TNF-α) instead of reducing them.

A 2019 meta-analysis published in Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids reviewed 66 commercial products: 70% exceeded the 5 meq/kg peroxide limit, and 40% exceeded TOTOX 26 (double the already-permissive GOED limit of 26). The most oxidised products were capsules with large surface areas and own-brand products.

What IFOS measures: the critical parameters

1. TOTOX (Total Oxidation Value)

TOTOX is the most important freshness indicator. It's calculated as:

TOTOX = (2 × Peroxides) + Anisidine

  • Peroxides (PV): primary oxidation (recent rancidity). IFOS limit: <5 meq/kg.
  • Anisidine (AV): secondary oxidation (advanced rancidity, aldehydes). IFOS limit: <20.
  • TOTOX IFOS limit: <26 (the GOED standard is the same, but IFOS audits each batch).

An omega 3 with TOTOX 8 is fresh. One with TOTOX 20 is at the limit. One with TOTOX 35 (common in supermarkets) is rancid and shouldn't be consumed.

2. Purity: heavy metals and PCBs

Fish bioaccumulates mercury, lead, PCBs and dioxins. Raw fish oil can concentrate them. IFOS requires:

  • Mercury: <0.1 ppm (parts per million).
  • Lead: <0.5 ppm.
  • Total PCBs: <45 ppb.
  • Dioxins: <2 pg TEQ/g (picogrammes of toxic equivalents).

IFOS products undergo molecular distillation or enzymatic purification to remove contaminants. Brands without certification may have detectable levels of mercury, especially if they use cod liver oil or large fish (tuna, Atlantic mackerel).

3. Potency: actual EPA and DHA

The label may say "1000 mg of omega 3", but how much is EPA+DHA? Many brands inflate the total figure by including other fatty acids (DPA, oleic acid) that don't have the documented benefits of EPA and DHA.

IFOS measures actual concentration using gas chromatography. An IFOS 5-star product must contain ≥90% of the potency declared on the label. If it says 500 mg of EPA, the batch must contain at least 450 mg actual.

How to read an IFOS certificate (and why the batch matters)

You go to the manufacturer's website or to IFOS.nutrasource.ca and search for the product. You receive a PDF with:

  1. Analysed batch number: must match the one on your bottle (printed on base or lid).
  2. Star rating (1-5): 5 stars = meets all parameters with margin.
  3. Numerical values: TOTOX, PV, AV, mercury, PCBs, EPA/DHA.
  4. Analysis date: should be recent (last 6-12 months).

If the manufacturer doesn't publish IFOS certificates per batch, or the certificate is from 3 years ago, you have no guarantee that your specific bottle is safe. Oxidation occurs during transport, storage in shops and in your home if you don't refrigerate.

Oxidised omega 3: documented adverse effects

Studies in humans and animal models have documented adverse effects of rancid omega 3:

  • Increased oxidised LDL: a 2016 clinical trial showed that omega 3 with TOTOX >30 raised oxidised LDL particles (atherogenic) by 18% vs. placebo.
  • Elevated inflammatory markers: mice fed oxidised fish oil showed increased levels of IL-6 and TNF-α, opposite to the expected effect.
  • Liver damage at high doses: animal models with rancid oil developed hepatic steatosis (fatty liver) from oxidative stress.
  • Digestive symptoms: nausea, reflux, "fish burps" (the most common symptom of advanced oxidation).

No study shows that oxidised omega 3 provides cardiovascular or cognitive benefits. Positive evidence for omega 3 comes from trials with fresh oil (TOTOX <10-15).

Triglyceride (TG) vs. ethyl ester (EE) format: why it matters

Omega 3 is sold in two chemical forms:

  1. Triglyceride (TG): natural form of fish oil. Three fatty acids bonded to a glycerol molecule.
  2. Ethyl ester (EE): synthetic form created to concentrate EPA/DHA through distillation. The fatty acids are bonded to ethanol, not glycerol.

Key difference: bioavailability. A 2019 meta-analysis in Nutrients (13 trials, n=1042) showed that TG format increases plasma EPA/DHA levels 24% more than EE format when taken on an empty stomach. With fatty food, the difference drops to 10%, but still favours TG.

Additionally, EE format is more susceptible to oxidation during manufacture, because the esterification process exposes fatty acids to heat and oxygen. Many uncertified EE products have TOTOX >20.

If you choose EE (for concentration or price), take it with fatty food (avocado, extra virgin olive oil, nuts) to improve absorption, and demand IFOS certification.

How to choose an omega 3 that really works

Verification protocol for buying omega 3:

1. IFOS 5-star certification of the current batch
Find the batch number on your bottle and verify the certificate on the manufacturer's website or at IFOS.nutrasource.ca. If it's not published, don't buy.

2. TOTOX <10, peroxides <5, anisidine <20
These values indicate optimal freshness. TOTOX between 10-20 is acceptable. Above 20, find another brand.

3. Triglyceride (TG) format preferably
Check the label: it should say "triglyceride form" or "re-esterified triglycerides". If it doesn't specify, it's probably EE.

4. Minimum 60% EPA+DHA concentration
If a 1000 mg capsule contains only 300 mg of EPA+DHA, it's low concentration. Look for ≥600 mg of EPA+DHA per capsule or per 2-capsule dose.

5. Fish origin: South Pacific or North Atlantic anchovetta
Small fish (anchovetta, sardine) accumulate less mercury than tuna or salmon. Peru and Norway have MSC-certified sustainable fisheries.

6. Opaque container with nitrogen
Capsules should be in individual blister packs or dark bottles, with nitrogen atmosphere to prevent post-opening oxidation. Avoid transparent bottles.

7. Refrigerate after opening
Even fresh omega 3 oxidises in your home if left in the heat. Store in the fridge once opened.

Optimal omega 3 dose depends on your goal:

Side effects and contraindications

Quality omega 3 (not oxidised, IFOS certified) is safe at doses up to 3 g/day for most people. Possible side effects:

Mild digestive: nausea, fishy burps (if this occurs, it's probably oxidising; refrigerate or switch brands). Taking with food reduces these symptoms.

Slight increased bleeding risk: at doses >3 g/day, may prolong coagulation time. Caution if you take anticoagulants (warfarin, apixaban) or antiplatelet agents (aspirin, clopidogrel). Consult your doctor before combining.

Interaction with blood pressure medication: omega 3 can potentiate blood-pressure-lowering effect. It's not dangerous, but your doctor might adjust doses.

Absolute contraindications:

  • Fish or shellfish allergy (use algae-derived omega 3 if vegan or allergic).
  • Coagulation disorders without medical supervision.

Oxidised omega 3 (without IFOS) does cause problems: reflux, liver discomfort, increased oxidised LDL. Quality is the difference between benefit and harm.

Algae omega 3: IFOS-certified vegan alternative

Algae omega 3 (Schizochytrium sp.) is the vegan source of DHA and EPA. Algae is the primary source of omega 3 in the food chain (fish bioaccumulate it by eating algae/plankton).

Advantages:

  • Sustainable: doesn't depend on fishing.
  • Fewer contaminants: cultured algae doesn't bioaccumulate mercury or PCBs.
  • IFOS available: brands like Testa and Örlö have IFOS certification for algae omega 3.

Disadvantages:

  • More expensive: algae cultivation is costly.
  • DHA>EPA ratio: some algae produce only DHA, little EPA (look for strains that provide both).

If you're vegan or allergic to fish, algae omega 3 with IFOS certification is the best option. Recommended dose: same as fish oil (1000-2000 mg/day of combined DHA+EPA).

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I tell if my omega 3 is oxidised without an IFOS certificate?
Yes, though not with precision. If capsules smell rancid when you open them, or burps are intense and persistent, it's probably oxidised. Dark (brown) colour also indicates advanced oxidation. But TOTOX values of 15-20 have no obvious symptoms and are already harmful, which is why you need a certificate.

Is liquid omega 3 better than capsules?
Not necessarily. Liquid can be fresher if well stored (opaque bottle, nitrogen), but oxidises faster after opening. Capsules in individual blisters protect better. Both formats can be IFOS certified; what matters is the certificate, not the format.

Are supermarket omega 3 with low prices reliable?
Rarely. Independent analyses (ConsumerLab, Labdoor) show that own-brand and budget products have the highest oxidation rates and discrepancies between label and actual content. Without IFOS certification, it's a lottery. You're paying less but receiving rancid oil.

Do I need omega 3 if I eat oily fish 3 times a week?
If you consume 300-400 g/week of fresh oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), you probably cover basic needs (500-1000 mg/day of EPA+DHA). But if your goal is therapeutic dose (>1500 mg/day) for inflammation or cognition, you need supplements. Also, fish can contain mercury (especially tuna, swordfish); IFOS omega 3 is purified.

How long does it take to have an effect?
Plasma EPA/DHA levels stabilise in 2-4 weeks with daily consistent dosing. Cardiovascular benefits (triglyceride reduction) are measurable at 4-6 weeks. Cognitive and anti-inflammatory effects require 8-12 weeks minimum. It's a long-term supplement, not an immediate-acting drug.

Can I combine omega 3 with other supplements?
Yes, it's safe and synergistic with most supplements. Evidence-backed combinations:

  • Omega 3 + creatine: improves muscle and cognitive health in those over 50 (Creatine for women over 40).
